PUF, Partnership between the University of Valenciennes, France, and Florida Institute of Technology

Our three-year Partner University Fund (PUF) program is a new educational and research partnership in Human-Centered Design between the University of Valenciennes in France and Florida Institute of Technology in the USA. It started end of 2012. Faculty on both sides work together in education and research. The main topic is risk management in life-critical systems. It includes: Situation Awareness and Impact of new technology; Reliability assessment: human errors as well as system failures; Emotions; Procedures, system monitoring, control and management; Socio-organizational issues of crisis occurrence and management; Cooperative work including human-machine cooperation and CSCW; Responsibility and accountability: task and function allocation, authority sharing; Interactivity, networking and management evolution; Lessons learned for Human-Centered Design. We had a Summer School on July 1-5, 2013, in Valenciennes, France, and a Winter School on April 3-7, 2014, at Florida Institute of Technology, USA.

International Master in Transportation and Energy at The University of Valenciennes and Hainaut Cambrésis, France

Located in the North of France, the ENSIAME (Engineering School in Computer Sciences, Automation, Mechanics, Electronics) offers a unique educational experience to young, talented men and women interested in the TRANSPORTATION industry. Highly qualified teaching staff lead our students in acquiring key technologies and management expertise. A wide range of contacts in relevant industries exposes the students to corporate life issues in addition to a solid theoretical background. The ENSIAME, University of Valenciennes (UVHC), offers an exciting and challenging environment in which to learn, experiment and develop. The ENSIAME, which is at the forefront of technology in several industrial sectors, focuses in particular on the TRANSPORTATION industry (automotive, railway, aeronautics). Our teaching and research staff are skilled in product development, analysis and manufacturing in the transportation domain, and have access to wide ranging experimental and fabrication facilities. The International Master "Transportation and Energy" is taught in English and offers lectures as well as individual research and development projects in the field of automotive, railway and aeronautical engineering. Students may take advantage of our excellent experimental facilities and work directly with industry representatives (Renault, PSA, Alstom,Bombardier, Audi, BMW, Bosch, Daimler).

Extreme By Design

In a Stanford multidisciplinary, project-based course, student design teams are building a better world...one product at a time. EXTREME BY DESIGN follows Stanford business, engineering and medical students as they work in teams, using design thinking methods, to develop products and services that serve the needs of the world's poor. One student team works on a breathing device to keep babies alive in Bangladesh. Another seeks a way to store drinking water in Indonesia. The third team project is to design an IV medicine infusion pump. It's all part of the Design for Extreme Affordability course inspired and launched by the Stanford d.school. The film begins on the first day of the course and ends eight months later as one group of students returns to Asia to test their device amid plans to launch a startup. At a time of unprecedented global challenges EXTREME BY DESIGN shows the power of human-centered design in creating innovative, effective and sustainable solutions to the complex problems facing us.
